On a very cold day, after visiting several temples in Kyoto, my 12 years old son and I went here. It is the nearest one from our hotel. I spent 550 yen and entered first because I was freezing. Then my son, who CAN speak Japanese, told the owner he is a junior high school student. The students’ price is 400 yen . The woman asked for his student’s card, otherwise he has to pay 550 yen as an adult. Who has a Japanese student card? We are just tourists! From his appearance, a 12 years old boy is an adult??? An adult only wants 150 yen more to trick a 12 years old like this way? Oh yeah, maybe his height is 155cm, for that woman as an ADULT!

The owner is very helpful and welcoming to newcomers and foreigners. Although she does not speak much english but it's all good. The sento experience itself is very nice, no stress at all. You only need to follow the sento and onsen rules. ¥500 for entry and ¥30 for towel rental (small towel though). Definitely a go to place if you need to bathe and experience onsen while passing through Kyoto without bathing facilities available to you for some reason or another.

Simple, Japanese bathhouse with a couple of relaxing hot spas, and a sauna. A good place to relax after sight seeing. Low entry fee.

Very old school, neighbourhood sentō that’s frequented by mostly locals but some foreign travelers. ¥510 gets you a locker, bathing facilities, a hot pool, medium-heat pool, a cold pool and two jacuzzi-type pools. And a sauna room. VERY relaxing, hadn’t been to a public furo in years & it reminded me of old Kyoto…not much English available but there are several posters (with drawings) detailing proper washing and soaking etiquette. Brought my own towels, soap, shampoo and razor.

Taisho-yu is a hidden gem, conveniently located just a short walk from Kyoto Station. Stepping into this traditional public bath feels like stepping back in time. The facility, while simple, offers a genuine sento experience, with clean and well-maintained pools. The water is comfortably hot, perfect for relaxing after a long day of exploring the city. There are a variety of baths, including a main hot bath and a cold plunge for those brave enough to try it. What stood out to me is the calm, quiet atmosphere, allowing you to unwind without the hustle of more tourist-heavy spots. The locals frequent Taisho-yu, which adds to the authenticity, and while signage is minimal in English, the friendly staff are always willing to help. It’s ideal for anyone looking to experience a piece of Japanese bathing culture without the frills.
