宇品天然温泉 ほの湯

Exellent onsen! Very friendly and helpful staff and specially as I’m a foreigner, felt welcomed. The variety of pools and water jacuzzi’s is big, it’s very clean and newly renovated. There is no lack of staff cleaning and arranging inside. The massage I had was very relaxing and professional. Great experience in Hiroshima.

This is a very nice sento, but they strongly enforce the no tattoo rule. They will kick you out without refund even if you have a very small and concealed tattoo. Some sentos are more stringent than others, but I would avoid this one if you are a foreigner.

Visit at weekend, the ticket is about 900 yen per person. It’s crowed, but still can find space in the bath. After entering, you can open the locker with the number same with the number in your bracelet. Overall it’s a good experience.

Take streetcar #5 from Hiroshima eleven stops to Ujina 2-chome and then an eleven minute walk in a straight line. Take your own towel, face towel and brush. Stand in front of the temperature taking machine, stick your shoes in a shoebox, grab the key, walk inside and buy a ticket for 880 yen during the week, I think it's 940 on the weekends. Hand the shoebox key and the ticket to the guy at the front and he will hand you another key for a larger locker inside the onsen. Women can be seen inside the men's locker room mopping the floor, unusual coming from the US but at least to me, not a big deal. Wash yourself first and then try the various baths, including baths outside, cold baths and a sauna. A most excellent adventure, must be tried.

I’m probably the only foreigner at this Onsen during the evening I went. Going onsen for the locals seem to be a family affair. Grandparents and grandkids and secondary school kid groups- all kind of local demographics can be sighted. Friendly staffs speak basic English. ¥750 per visit for adult. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash are all provided. Just bring along your own towel. Lots of onsen pools. 3 hot pools outdoor plus 2 hot tub outdoor. Indoor pools for man: 2 hot pools plus a 18.5°c cold pool. Spend at least an hour or so please. I took a bus from Chuo-dori. Around 25 mins journey.
