The Villa & Barrel Lounge

If someone says Shizuoka isn’t fun, it must be because they’ve never been to Yōson (it’s not that). Yōson not only has fewer crowds and fresh air, plus a beautiful coastline, but also a dream spot for craft‑beer lovers: The Villa & Barrel Lounge, a hotel project launched by the craft‑brew brand West Coast Brewing. 📇 Design West Coast Brewing (formerly WCD) is known for its brewing, but design is their core focus. After a thorough renovation, the property now features five guest rooms, a tap room, and a lounge. The exterior is painted in bright goose‑yellow and navy blue, and you’ll see the HOP DUDE mascot throughout the corridors and rooms. 🚈 Transportation Take the Tōkaidō Main Line to Yōson Station; it’s about a 15‑minute walk from the exit. HelloBike stations are located near the JR station and the hot‑spring area, so you can unlock a bike and leisurely ride along the coast. 🍽️ Food Breakfast and lunch offer waffles and sandwiches, while dinner serves Mexican burritos. Of course, there are other nearby restaurants to choose from as well.

This place is nothing short of phenomenal and it shows that the proprietors put a lot of thought into putting this concept of a ryokan for beer geeks together and to make it work and make it fun. Firstly, the location. It’s across a small street from the brewery and guest rooms are right above the taproom. The taproom opens at 8am and closes at 10pm. I’ll just hit the room highlights and you can check the rest out on the website (I also posted a photo of the introduction sheet which goes into some detail about amenities and facilities). Firstly, there’s a kegerator with a 5L keg in the room (you get 10L a day complimentary). There’s a growler in the room so you can take delicious WCB beer with you on your adventures. There’s coffee beans if you’re into grinding and brewing your own. Suffice it to say it’s a stay unlike most any other you’ve had before. There are similar concepts at Dogfish Head Inn and the Brewdog hotels that feature in-room beer experiences.

My husband and I stayed here for one night, the staff is wonderful, they speak good English if you don’t speak Japanese well, it’s only a quick 1 hour Shinkansen train ride from Tokyo, if you are a craft beer lover and want to add this spot to your Japan trip Itinerary like we did, 100% worth it! I was unable to partake in drinking due to pregnancy but my husband said the beer was amazing, there’s a beer tap included with your stay, the beds are comfortable and very clean accommodation! I also want to add that the menu items were very foreigner friendly, it’s the first time I saw Mac and cheese on a menu and the fried chicken breast was really great! We ate here for lunch and dinner and will also eat here for breakfast! There’s a beach (rock, not sand) and a cute gelato spot around the corner for something to do and a trusty 7-Eleven for those much needed snacks! We will definitely be coming back in the future.

Simply amazing experience. Great rooms with a good size. Impeccable service. Glorious beer. The town is a bit too sleepy so dining options and activities outside the hotel are limited but that's a very minor gripe.

This is a paradise for craft beer lovers. Stayed just two nights in the “Citra” room. It is a very spacious room and incredibly comfy. The highlight is of course the tap of exclusively brewed WCB beer right in your room. They even offer to replace the keg twice if emptied, even on a short stay like this. Also included were some beers in the minibar, a coupon for the onsen nearby, and I also got a welcome drink in the tap room when I arrived. The location is quiet, obviously not the most convenient, but still only about a 10-minute stroll from Mochimune Station. Staff overall were incredibly friendly and helpful as well. There is also a tap room with 16 taps to enjoy beer from one of the greatest craft beer breweries in Japan.
