Was it just for me that the shower would randomly turn scalding hot? Maybe use the communal bath. Edit: There was also a mild cold draft by the window. Overall, it was quiet with no white noise (besides some subdued sounds from the railway crossing). Sidenote: I don’t think reviews should complain too much about language - you’re in Japan after all. Though I agree the self-given 4-stars is a bit much… The check-in station service design felt disjointed and they made you store and grab your own luggage with string just by the wall.

My company booked me in here for a business trip. It was OK, but I'd prefer to stay elsewhere if I came again. Staff are friendly and the breakfast buffet was interesting. I travel across Japan regularly for business and hotel breakfasts can get a bit boring, so it was nice to have lots of local specialities for a change. However, check-in was slow and painful. The reason is you can't be checked in by staff, you have to manually enter all your details into a check-in machine. Why? Who benefits from this system? Certainly not the guests. Staff seem to be frustrated by it too as they have to run around explaining what to do. Eventually I got to my room. It was an odd design, with a sink in the middle of it. This makes it seem less like a 4-star hotel and more like a university dorm room! Instead of the usual bath/shower combo, there was only a small shower cubicle. It's my company's fault for booking the cheapest room, but it's worth bearing in mind if you expect all rooms to have a bath. To make matters worse I was "strictly forbidden" to use the public bath because I have some Scottish poetry inked on my arm. I mean, I know many hotels have a tattoo rule, but in Matsuyama? I can bathe in the world famous Dogo Onsen no problem, but not my own hotel. It comes across as snobbish. I was happy to see a large, flat screen TV, however it only shows terrestrial channels in addition to one of those old-fashioned Video On Demand services that you have to pay for. I used my phone instead. Finally, it's a large, busy hotel, but there are only two elevators for guests. If, like me, you are staying for a few days, you will be thoroughly sick of waiting for them by the end. It would be convenient to let guests use the staircase, rather than make it for emergency use only. So, overall, nice staff, but management have made some bad decisions (in my opinion).

It’s a nice hotel with train theming(love the hand straps) the ice cream was perfect, the breakfast was good as well. The in hotel sauna facility was decent (but of course since dogo onsen is here everyone goes there instead) I suppose the only con was that the staff seemed only interested to point you to the machines for check in. Even depositing the luggage was done quite casually - they let you secure and retrieve your own luggage..

Unfortunately had a very unpleasant stay at this hotel. The soundproofing for the rooms is very bad. I could hear people walking, talking and opening and closing doors. Even worse is for some reason large groups of people would congregate on my floor outside the elevators talking very loudly. I would also hear kids screaming and running around. Appearance wise the room is acceptable and modern, although I did not like having the sink separate from the bathroom. The elevators also have a very long wait. I read these comments before I booked the room but it is definitely true and worse than I ever could have expected. Do not ignore these comments, you will wait several minutes just to get in the elevator. The breakfast is nice though, I will say that. Lots of varieties of citrus juices to choose from which was a cool experience. Many local Matsuyama delicacies to try like Nabeyaki Udon and Tai Meshi. It's very busy. Finally I did not feel the staff service was up to hotel standards. I was greeted very coldly, no smile or facial expression. It made me feel unwelcomed or that I was unwanted there because I was a foreigner. I did not notice this attitude towards Japanese speakers. Also nobody explained how the free breakfast worked upon check-in. I probably wouldn't book here again.

Rooms are larger than expected and clean. My room had a view of Matsuyama Castle and it was beautiful on a fine day. The onsen is great as well for the price. Indoor bath, outdoor bath, cold plunge pool, and sauna all in one. So much value for the price. The staff barely speak english though which I didn't expect, but it worked out fine.
