5件Hagoromo-yu is a great public bath (sento) in Nishi-Shinjuku. For the same price as other sentos, it feels much more spacious, which I really like. The regular bath is 550 yen, and there is also an open-air terrace bath and a sauna (sauna costs extra). They offer towel rentals, and you can also buy new towels, hair combs, and skincare items inside, which is very convenient. The lobby has a large, comfortable resting area with a nice library, where you can relax, read books, and enjoy milk or yogurt after the bath. The staff are very kind and welcoming, especially two female staff members who are always polite and give such a good vibe. Every time I visit, I feel comfortable and relaxed. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a nice sento in the area.
Our experience was wonderful due to the lovely staff who were very accomodating when it came to our additional luggage. Very friendly, great experience, clean premises, would highly recommend if you’re looking for a local bath experience!
The number of pools were little and water was too hot. Cannot fit many people, like 3,4 people per pool ish. The lounge at the entrance is nice though with mangas.
It was quite the experience as my first time to a public bathhouse in Japan! There is no English so it’s a bit of a guessing game if you have little to no Japanese like me. First you take your shoes off at the entrance and pop them in a locker. Then you give the key from the locker to the receptionist and choose either just the bath or the sauna and bath (which comes with towels if you didn’t bring any). They shall give you a key for the locker in the changing room, women on the left of the reception and men on the right. I did struggle to get the correct locker myself as there were 2 numbers on my key 🥲 In the changing room it is unabashed nudity, if you feel uncomfortable here it is best to turn back now. Everyone leaves their towels in their lockers and heads up with their own toiletries (however complimentary body wash and shampoo is provided at the showers). The bathing room is completely open and you can grab a stool, bowl, toiletries and sit down at a free shower station. Ensure to clean yourself thoroughly before getting in a bath. If you prefer to shower standing up you can too, and there are also stand up showers near the entrance. The baths themselves are glorious! With a cold (13C), hot (42C) and medium (35C) bath, the latter also being a jet pool style bath. I enjoyed dipping between the cold and hot for that sweet circulation. There is also a steam room and sauna in the bathing room. I am ashamed to admit I did not understand how to get into the sauna (there is a white plastic item you are given when you pay for the sauna access). But I had such a wonderful time bathing it did not feel necessary. In general I left in high spirits and feeling extremely clean and refreshed 😌 If you are comfortable with nudity or have the courage to try I highly recommend going! But do keep to yourself, as with most of Japan respect to others is part of why the public bathhouse works 😌
A great local public bath. Inside is pretty large but also a bit old. They have hot bath, bubble bath, cold bath and exterior bath. They alternate salt sauna and finish sauna between man and woman bath. The crowd is mostly local people and families. To come here walk from Nishinishinjuku-gochoume Station or Nakano Sakaue Station. Also lots of manga to read at reception. If you are not using sauna, then bring your towel or rent it.
