We had a great 2-nights stay here in November, 2025. This was our getaway from the visit in Tokyo. The ryokan was spotless and quiet, and the staff were attentive throughout. The outdoor bath was excellent. We were lucky to see both autumn foliage and snowfall while soaking. Royan staff told us it was very rare to see the snow so early. I also loved the lounge areas, where I could sip tea and draw postcards after the bath. The food was very good, with all ingredients sourced locally from Shinshu. I would stay here again when returning during ski season.

We stayed for 2 nights and had a wonderful experience at this ryokan. Everything was great from start to finish — the room was lovely and very comfortable. Both breakfast and dinner featured fresh local ingredients and everything tasted really good. There was also a good selection of sake to enjoy. We celebrated my birthday during our stay and the staff surprised us with a small gesture, which was very thoughtful. Their cake selection was great too. The highlight of the trip was definitely the onsen. It was not crowded, so we could truly relax and enjoy it. There’s also a beautiful outdoor onsen. They offer a private onsen as well for 7,000 yen for two, which is a nice option for couples or those wanting more privacy. The service from the staff was amazing throughout our stay. We would definitely come back and stay for more nights on our next trip! Thank you for the lovely experience

We had a wonderful two-night stay at Sakaeya. From the moment we arrived until we departed by train, we were treated with exceptional hospitality and care by the staff. The hotel facilities were excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed both the ryokan’s onsen bath and the private onsen in our suite. Breakfast and dinner were outstanding, as were the sake pairings with dinner. In addition to the amazing food, the staff thoughtfully adapted my wife’s course so she could fully enjoy the experience gluten-free, which we greatly appreciated. While the stay was on the pricier side, we felt the overall experience was absolutely worth it. We can’t thank the staff enough for making our weekend so special and for going above and beyond to ensure my wife’s birthday was memorable. We have traveled throughout Japan for over a year, and this ryokan is now one of our favorites due to the exceptional facilities and hospitality.

I didn’t stay overnight but came after Snow Monkeys to try to get a walk in private onsen experience for 2. I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to find one in Shibu Onsen but wanted to try. It was absolutely incredible. I frequently sauna and this was the best bathhouse experience of my life. The private onsen is amazing, so much attention to detail. Very kind and helpful staff. Beautiful lobby with color and interesting items in every corner. Truly an incredible experience. This place reminds me of Spirited Away.

I did not book a room, so I cannot comment on or review the room and the stay, but I had a private onsen experience that was amazing. I booked one month in advance a private onsen for me and my wife, and from the very first contact through email it was pleasant and the staff were really nice. The hotel is located in Shiba Onsen Town, a very cozy, warm, and nice place known for its onsens, and where it comes to life in the evening. Because we had a day trip from Nagano to the Ice Monkey Park in the morning, and we wanted to be home in the evening, we did not visit the town during the evening when it is illuminated and when the atmosphere is at its best. We came during the afternoon around 12 to 1 pm, and the town was closed and very quiet, but nevertheless we liked it and we walked around for a bit. We then entered the hotel and the staff was very friendly and helped us immediately. The hotel itself looks very luxurious, everything looked and smelled nice, and we then went up to the private onsen, and this was by far the best onsen experience we had. The private room was huge and had multiple sections. You enter the room where you can comfortably change your clothes, and you have so many amenities that I cannot sum them all up, but rest assured you literally need nothing, only clean new underwear and that is it. The private room has a showering area, the hot onsen, a separate sauna, a cold bath, and a separate cold room, and all in all we spent one hour and thirty minutes inside and it was well worth the experience. After we finished we went down and had a cold milk drink at the hotel lobby, and we were pleasantly surprised they offered food items such as cup ramens and curries that were halal or vegan, and we purchased some local apple juice as well. Definitely worth the money and the experience.
